FAQs

In many offices, the walls stop at the drop ceiling instead of going all the way to the structural ceiling. That leaves an open space (plenum) above the tiles, which sound travels through easily. The fix is adding ceiling tile backers or extending the wall up to the deck. Without closing that gap, even the best wall treatments won’t solve the problem.

Standard ceiling tiles don't do much for sound. Acoustic ceiling tiles absorb sound inside the room to improve the acoustics of the space but they don’t stop sound from passing through. To block noise, you’ll need sound blocking ceiling tile backers, which add mass and stop sound from leaking through the plenum.

If you're trying to block sound from leaving or coming into a space, they're a great option! When considering the acoustics of your office, if you have a large open space above your ceiling tiles, adding in ceiling tile backers can actually make your acoustics worse because you're preventing the sound from escaping into a large space. If you have a standard 2 ft or so plenum, this isn't a problem.

The first place we would start is with the doors. If you don't have solid core doors, you'll want them. Then, you can add a door seal kit to close the gaps around the door. After that, you'll want to check to see if the shared wall reaches the true ceiling. If not, ceiling tile backers are critical.

Lastly, adding acoustic panels inside the room will make the space sound better, improving focus and calm during meetings and calls. If you have a large conference table in the middle, consider installing an acoustic cloud or two above it to help tame those direct reflections off of it.
