Acoustical materials absorb sound and reduce reflected noise inside a room, cutting down on echo and reverb to improve overall sound quality. They don't block sound from entering or leaving a space like soundproofing materials do, but they can modestly lower the noise level you hear inside the room they're in. Soundproofing FAQs
These products address two types of noise: airborne and impact. Airborne noise travels through the air (voices, music, traffic) and gets in through gaps or thin, light materials. Impact noise comes from direct impacts on a structure (footsteps, dragged furniture) and travels through the building itself, so sealing gaps alone won’t stop it.

You need two things: mass and an airtight seal. Light, leaky construction lets sound waves through. Add mass to your wall construction with a dense barrier like Luxury Linerâ„¢ 1 lb MLV Roll. Make your full assembly an airtight construction by closing all gaps with acoustical sealant caulk. Next, look at your weak points for the biggest sound leaks: doors and windows. Seal solid core doors with a Sound Lockâ„¢ Door Seal Kit, and seal windows with Fantastic Frameâ„¢ Window Inserts.
To stop impact noise, you need to isolate your surfaces from the structure. On the ceiling side of a floor-ceiling assembly or on a shared wall opposite cabinets and slamming doors, isolate the drywall from the framing with RSIC-1® Resilient Sound Isolation Clips so vibration can’t travel through the structure. For floor-ceiling assemblies, you can also install UnderBlock™ Rubber Floor Underlayment under your finished flooring to decouple it from the subfloor.
