How to Soundproof a Car

Start by identifying where the noise is entering the vehicle. Most vehicle noise comes from these seven areas. The table below shows how each noise source is typically solved.

To install soundproofing materials, the metal surface must be exposed. This usually involves removing interior panels, upholstery, carpeting, trim pieces, wheel liners, etc. Once exposed, clean the metal thoroughly with alcohol or degreaser so the materials bond properly.

After the deadener is installed, the next layer controls airborne noise. The best automotive noise barrier is Luxury Liner Pro, which blocks sound traveling through the floor and body panels. This will be installed at 100% coverage wherever it’s placed. The only places where it won’t be used are the engine compartment and the roof. It’s also considered a specialty install for doors when improving mid-bass response.

When treating the roof and for most door applications, use hydrophobic melamine foam. In the engine compartment, use a radiant barrier product like Mega Block Hydrophobic Foam Heat Shields or Heat Wave Pro jute insulation.
