What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Soundproofing during new construction is significantly easier and more effective than retrofitting an existing space. By planning isolation into the wall, floor, and ceiling assemblies from the beginning, you can achieve higher performance, better STC ratings, and stronger IIC ratings without demolition later. If you need soundproofing materials, planning ahead ensures the structure performs as intended from day one.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Build walls, floors, and ceilings for strong STC rating performance in new construction
  • Improve IIC rating to better control impact noise between spaces
  • Decide when to use isolation clips, mass loaded vinyl, or damping compounds based on your build goals
  • Treat windows and doors properly in new builds to prevent sound leaks
  • Understand the the best-fit soundproofing assemblies for your project

Before You Start: Understanding STC and IIC

When soundproofing new construction, you’ll see references to STC rating and IIC rating.

  • STC rating measures how well a wall or ceiling blocks airborne sound like voices or music.
  • IIC rating measures how well a floor/ceiling assembly reduces impact noise like footsteps.

Both metrics matter in residential, multi-family, and commercial builds — especially if you’re soundproofing a hotel, apartment, or office.

Step-by-Step: How to Soundproof New Construction

Step 1: Soundproof the Walls

Wall assemblies are the primary barrier for airborne sound. In new construction, this is the ideal time to incorporate decoupling, damping, and added mass.

Using RSIC™ Resilient Sound Isolation Clips decouples drywall from framing, reducing sound transfer. Use mass loaded vinyl for blocking airborne noise with mass. Apply Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound between drywall layers to add damping to reduced noise transfer.

If you want to explore different sound isolation clips and hangers, compare options before finalizing the assembly.
