FAQs

For a van conversion, absolutely yes - insulate your van. There are very few places in the USA with comfortable temperatures year round (I see you Los Angeles)! Insulating your van's walls, ceiling, and doors will help keep a consistent temperature inside - warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Yes, Second Skin Audio is an authorized seller of authentic 3M™ Thinsulate™ Acoustic Insulation. 3M™ considers us a Preferred Converter! We source our stock directly to ensure you receive genuine, premium-grade 3M™ SM600L and SM400L materials for your vehicle or camper van build. When you buy from us, you are guaranteed the real product backed by 3M's industry-leading thermal and acoustic engineering.

For walls and doors, we recommend flexible insulation that can fit into curves and around the structure of the van. 3M Thinsulate SM600L is an excellent pick because its cost-effective, water-resistant and conformable. We often use our recycled jute products as well (EcoVerb Roll and Heat Wave Pro), which are extremely flexible, budget-conscious, and eco-friendly. Customers concerned about exposure to water often use MegaZorbe - our line of hydrophobic melamine foam. For ceilings, we will recommend these same products but will vary the thickness depending on the specific model and height of the van.

Reflectix is almost always a poor choice for a van conversion as its easy to mess up the install. To get a good R-value, Reflectix needs to be installed with an air gap between itself and the substrate. It's easy for a DIY installer to mess this up - especially when combined with the moving, ever-changing environment that is a house on wheels.
