What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Driving or living in a van often means dealing with road noise, vibration, and heat entering through the floor, walls, and engine compartment. Proper soundproofing helps create a quieter, more comfortable environment while improving insulation.

This guide walks through a practical layered approach to reduce vibration, block noise, and improve thermal protection inside your van.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Reduce road noise and vibration inside a cargo van for a quieter driving experience
  • Understand the correct layering strategy for sound deadening and insulation
  • Identify where to install materials for maximum effectiveness throughout the vehicle
  • Choose the best products for floors, walls, roofs, and engine areas
  • Compare insulation materials for both sound reduction and thermal protection

Step-by-Step: How to Soundproof a Van

The following steps walk through the complete process for soundproof a van.

Step 1: Soundproof the Van Cargo Area Floor

The floor is one of the largest surfaces transmitting road noise and vibration. Proper layering here provides the foundation for overall soundproofing. For more details on van floor builds, see insulating a van floor.

Floor Layer 1: Apply Sound Deadening

Applying an automotive sound deadening material is important for reducing structural noise. Start with some vibration damping sheets applied to at least 60% of the metal floor surface. These sheets reduce vibration in the sheet metal and limit structure-borne noise.

An alternative option is using spray on sound dampening, which can reach complex floor contours and seams. Get all the Spectrum you need with the bottle and gun for spray application in the Spectrum Van Soundproofing Kit.

Floor Layer 2: Add a Sound Barrier

After vibration damping, install Luxury Liner Pro™. This dense mass loaded vinyl barrier blocks airborne noise from entering the cabin and provides a layer of insulation. This should be installed at 100% coverage. Get the Second Skin System of Damplifier Pro + Luxury Liner Pro in one van-floor-friendly package: the Van Floor Insulation Kit.

Key Tip

Before installing any sound deadening material, thoroughly clean the metal floor surface with a degreaser or alcohol-based cleaner. Removing dust, oils, and debris helps the material bond properly and prevents future adhesion issues.
