How to Soundproof and Insulate an RV

Road noise commonly enters through the wheel wells and floor structure. Treating these areas reduces vibration and helps limit the amount of road sound entering the cabin. Start by removing the wheels and inner wheel well liners if present. Thoroughly clean the metal surface to remove dirt, grease, and debris.

Our wheel well soundproofing kit comes with Spectrum liquid sound deadener and the spray gun and bottle to do the job. Applying three 1mm layers is the best way to soundproof wheel wells. Spectrum also works great for sound deadening an undercarriage.

If road noise is still noticeable after treatment, additional strategies for reducing road noise can help address tire and chassis vibration and airborne noise.

Large RV engines generate significant noise and heat that can enter the cabin through the firewall. Apply Damplifier Pro to the cabin-side firewall with at least 60% coverage to reduce metal vibration. Over that layer, install Luxury Liner Pro at 100% coverage to block airborne engine noise from entering the interior.

Many RVs also have an engine “doghouse” cover inside the cabin, which can be very noisy. Line the inside of the doghouse with Mega Block to absorb sound and reflect radiant engine heat away from the cabin.

Walls, floors, ceilings, and doors account for most temperature loss and noise transfer in an RV. Start by insulating the walls, doors, and roof cavities using one of the following materials:

• Mega Zorbe
• Heat Wave Pro
• 3M Thinsulate SM600L

These materials provide sound absorption and thermal insulation to reduce heat transfer through the body panels. After, insulate the floor by installing Luxury Liner Pro as a dense sound barrier. This layer blocks airborne noise from entering through the chassis and provides a solid insulation R-value.

If you hear significant noise through the RV walls, you can also apply Luxury Liner Pro directly to the interior wall structure using strong double-sided tape.

Generators and water pumps can create noticeable noise inside the RV. To quiet a generator, build or upgrade the enclosure using vibration damping and sound blocking materials. Start by applying Damplifier Pro to the enclosure surfaces to reduce vibration. Then install Luxury Liner Pro to block airborne noise from escaping the box. This layered approach is commonly used when building a soundproof generator box.
