What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Wheel wells are one of the biggest entry points for tire noise and road vibration. Every rotation of the tire sends sound and vibration through the wheel well and into the vehicle cabin. By applying a sound deadening coating and treating key areas around the wheel wells, you can significantly reduce tire noise and improve overall driving comfort.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Understand why wheel wells are one of the largest sources of road noise in a vehicle
  • Prepare wheel wells properly for sound deadening to ensure strong adhesion and durability
  • Apply spray-on sound deadening coatings correctly for effective vibration control
  • Decide when to add additional sound treatment inside the vehicle for greater noise reduction
  • Choose the best sound deadening kit for your vehicle based on your goals and setup

Step-by-Step: How to Sound Deaden Wheel Wells

Proper wheel well treatment is one of the most effective ways to improve road noise reduction and is often the first step to reducing tire noise.

Step 1: Prepare the Wheel Wells

Start by removing the plastic wheel well liners so you can access the metal or structural surface underneath. Once exposed, thoroughly clean the entire wheel well of any dirt, grease, and debris using denatured alcohol. Dirt, grease, and debris will prevent sound deadening materials from bonding correctly. If you notice rust, remove it using a wire brush or rust treatment.

Next, tape and mask any areas where you do not want coating applied. This includes suspension components, brake lines, and other moving parts.

Key Tip

If you're applying sound deadening to fiberglass or high-gloss metal surfaces, apply a primer such as POR-15 to improve adhesion.
