How to Reduce Engine Noise and Exhaust Noise

The firewall sits between the engine bay and the cabin and is one of the biggest paths for engine noise and heat. You can treat either the engine side or the cabin side of the firewall. Both approaches reduce vibration and block heat transfer. Before installing materials, thoroughly clean the metal surface with denatured alcohol so adhesives bond properly.

Install our vibration damping mat on the firewall metal. This layer reduces vibration in the sheet metal that transfers engine noise into the cabin. We typically recommend 60% coverage to get about 95% of vibration reduction, but if thermal control is the central issue, 100% coverage should be used.

Once vibration has been reduced, you can add insulation to block both noise and heat. For the cabin side, install your sound and heat barrier layer, Luxury Liner Pro™, with the foam side facing the firewall. Use P329 spray adhesive or strong double-sided tape when mounting vertically. You’ll want to remain at 100% coverage to have a continuous sound and heat barrier.

For the engine side, install firewall sound deadening maintaining at least 2 inches of clearance from heat sources. Mega Block Hydrophobic heat shield will absorb sound inside the engine compartment, insulate, and reflect radiant heat away from the cabin.

Your hood liner plays a major role in reducing engine noise and heat. If the factory liner is worn or missing, here is how to install hood insulation:

1. Remove the existing liner (if there)
2. Clean the hood metal thoroughly
3. Apply Damplifier Pro sound deadener
4. Add insulation such as Heat Wave Pro or Mega Block
5. Tape the seams

Before installing materials around the floor or transmission tunnel, clean the metal surfaces to remove dirt, grease, and debris. This helps adhesives bond properly and ensures materials stay in place long term.

Exhaust heat often transfers through the floor and transmission tunnel. Install a radiant barrier such as Thermal Block™ Radiant Heat Reflector to reflect heat away from the cabin. This works well as an exhaust heat shield when applied along the transmission tunnel or near exhaust routing.
