How to Sound Deaden a Car Door

Start by removing the interior door panel so you can access the door structure. Once the panel is removed, clean the exposed metal surfaces using denatured alcohol or a degreaser. Removing dust, grease, and residue ensures the sound deadener adheres properly. Surface prep is one of the most important steps for a long-lasting installation.

The first layer of the Second Skin system is sound deadener applied to the outer door skin, which is the metal panel directly behind the exterior door. Our sound deadening sheets not only add mass but they properly constrain the metal, to really deaden the panel and reduce vibrations from road noise. 60% coverage is good for about 95% of the results, but for the best performance, install 100% coverage across the outer door skin.

Once the sound deadener layer is installed, apply acoustic insulation over it. Our preferred hydrophobic melamine foam for doors is Mega Zorbe™. It’s great for improving door acoustics and speaker clarity by absorbing reflections inside the door cavity. It will also help reduce the overall amount of noise that passes through the door into the cabin. Install the foam directly on top of the Damplifier Pro layer on the outer door skin.

For maximum results—especially in high-performance audio systems—you can also treat the inner door sheet metal. If your doors have a plastic “vapor shield” covering the inside of your car door, you can remove this to make it easy to access the inside of the door with sound dampening material.

First apply Damplifier Pro to the inner sheet metal to further reduce panel vibrations. Use a full sheet over the opening where the speaker mounts and then cut a hole out with a utility knife so the driver can operate normally. Next, install Speaker Tweakers behind the speakers to keep the audio focused towards you and help stop speaker back waves from distorting the speakers in your car doors.

Take it one step further and improve mid-bass response with Luxury Liner Pro™. This is a dense barrier layer that improves noise reduction. Create a template of the inner door panel to cut a precise sheet of Luxury Liner Pro to size. Install it over the inner sheet metal, being careful to make sure all mechanical operations inside the door are not obstructed. You can mount the material with P329 Spray adhesive, double sided tape, or via mechanical fasteners.

If your door panels rattle, the issue is often plastic touching plastic or plastic touching metal. First, check that all door bolts and fasteners are tightened properly. If the sound persists, install our high density closed cell foam to isolate the contact points between the plastic and metal paneling.

Once all materials are installed, reinstall the door panel and trim components. Ensure everything is accounted for and operational before closing it back up. After reassembly, your door will look factory stock but sound dramatically better in terms of noise control and speaker performance.
