What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Road noise, vibration, and heat from the pavement can travel directly through your vehicle’s undercarriage and into the cabin. Applying a spray-on sound deadening undercoating helps reduce vibration, tire noise, and thermal transfer while also protecting the underside of your vehicle.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Prepare your vehicle’s undercarriage properly before installing spray-on sound deadening
  • Apply spray-on sound deadener correctly for maximum road noise reduction
  • Understand proper drying and curing times between coats for best performance

Step-by-Step: How to Apply a Sound Deadening Undercoating

The following steps walk through prepping the undercarriage, applying the spray-on sound deadener, and optionally adding thermal protection.

Step 1: Prepare the Undercarriage

Proper preparation is critical for ensuring the sound deadening coating bonds correctly to the vehicle. Start by thoroughly cleaning the entire undercarriage using denatured alcohol or a degreaser to remove oil, dirt, and road debris. If rust is present, use a wire brush or rust removal tool to clean the surface until only solid metal remains.

Next, tape and mask off areas where the coating should not be applied. This typically includes exhaust components, suspension hardware, and brake components. Once the area is cleaned and masked, apply a self-etching primer such as POR-15, and allow the primer to fully cure for 24 hours before applying the sound deadening material.

Key Tip

Spend extra time cleaning and degreasing the surface. Proper prep dramatically improves adhesion and long-term durability.
