FAQs

Acoustic materials absorb sound energy inside a room instead of letting it bounce off hard surfaces. Less bouncing means less echo and reverberation, so speech stays clear and music sounds cleaner. They're common in recording studios, offices, classrooms, home theaters, and any other space where hard walls and ceilings make sound hard to control. When comparing products, look for a higher Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating, the standard measure of how much sound a material absorbs.

Each type of acoustic material fits different rooms, budgets, and goals. Here's how the main categories compare.

Acoustic Material Types at a Glance

Type Best For Shop
Panels Mounts to walls, works in almost any room Shop Acoustic Panels
Foam Common in recording studios and testing chambers Shop Acoustic Foam
Baffles Hangs vertically from the ceiling, suited to large open rooms with limited wall space Shop Acoustic Baffles
Clouds Hangs horizontally from the ceiling, suited to large open rooms with limited wall space Shop Acoustic Clouds
Ceiling Tiles Swaps in for standard drop-ceiling tiles for a built-in look Shop Acoustic Ceiling Tiles

It depends on the room and what you're using it for. A home office or conference room usually needs less coverage than a recording studio or a large space with hard, reflective surfaces. Our acoustic treatment calculator gives you a coverage recommendation based on your room's dimensions and use.

Spread panels across at least two adjacent walls rather than grouping them in one spot, and leave 3 to 12 inches of space between panels. In a studio or listening room, prioritize the first reflection points: the wall surfaces directly across from your speakers. For a deeper breakdown of placement strategy, see our guide on where to install acoustic panels. Most panels mount with spray adhesive, double-sided tape, or removable mounting tabs depending on the product and surface, and Stick Pin hangers offer a damage-free option that skips gluing directly to the wall. Our full installation guide walks through each method step by step.

Yes. Thicker panels absorb lower frequencies more effectively than thinner ones. Most panels run 1 to 2 inches thick, which covers the frequency range most rooms need, but we do have bass traps for extra low frequency absorption. Leaving a small air gap behind a 2" panel is a creative way to improve low-frequency performance.
