Ah, your pride and joy. You’ve put so much time into caring for her all her life. You’ve done everything to protect her from getting banged up and scratched. You can still remember taking her home for the first time and giving her a bath and tucking her in at night. You just want her to shine her brightest.

But GOSH can she be noisy!

If you were thinking about anything (or anyone) other than your truck, you should know that we understand what it's like to feel like a truck is part of the family. We know that the power that makes a truck a truck, also can make it louder than many of us would prefer—especially some older models.

Well, here's the good news; investing in top-quality, truck sound deadening material will take your truck to the next level. The inside should get the same love and devotion as the outside. Afterall, you want her to shine her brightest, and a smooth ride is part of that. A high-quality ride is in your future, but before we dive into how to properly sound deaden your truck, check out this video with Flannel Phil where he regretted installing cheap sound deadener and upgraded his ride with Second Skin!

Why is My Truck So Loud?

Whether you want a sound proof car or a sound proof truck, the problem is the same: the faster you go, the more your vehicle vibrates. Trucks, being the bigger species, have more surface area for wind to affect and have a higher center of gravity, so they suffer from some of the worst rattling. We refer to these vibrations and rattles as structural noise.

Effective sound deadening for trucks starts with treating the structural noise. The way to stop that structural noise is by stopping vibrations. By deadening the structure of your truck, you’ll drastically improve the quality of your ride, and who doesn’t want a smooth ride? We have products that do just that, and more!

The second type of noise you're dealing with in a truck is airborne noise. Trucks are notoriously loud because of two things: loud engine noise and tire noise. Bigger engines and bigger tires are going to produce bigger noise. With an effective auto sound barrier, you can listen to music with sound clarity and understand the person on the other end of a phone call, because let’s face it; when someone has to tell the punchline of a joke six times because you couldn’t hear it over the sound of your tires on the highway, the joke’s not funny anymore. It’s just not.

How to Sound Deaden a Truck

Sound deadening your truck doesn't have to be difficult. If you're willing to put in the work, you'll be glad you did, because the results are undoubtedly worth it. We'll help you complete your project so you can get back to doing what you do best.

Steps to Sound Deaden a Truck

There are four steps to sound deadening your truck, and we'll be careful to highlight which ones can be done without getting into the cab if you can't bring yourself to cut her open. Here is what we recommend:

  1.  Start with truck cab sound deadening. It’s a project but it’s worth it. Applying Damplifier Pro™ to all the metal panels in your truck will stop structural vibrations. Pair your vibration dampener with Luxury Liner Pro™, our best automotive noise barrier, to also reduce airborne noise. If you treat the doors, the floor, and the cabin side firewall, you'll reduce noise by 50% or more.
  2.  Quiet the engine compartment. A truck engine is both powerful and loud. We want to deaden the metal of the hood and firewall, while adding some absorption inside of the compartment. We have kits to help you muffle that engine noise and even improve how well the AC works!
  3.  Deaden the wheel wells to fight road noise. So much noise comes from your tires. Our liquid sound deadener (Spectrum™) is perfect for reducing vibrations starting at the wheel wells. this is a "best bang for your buck" treatment if you don't want to install materials inside the cab.
  4.  Insulate the roof for noise and heat control. Adding Damplifier Pro™ and a layer of high performance insulation to your truck roof is another way to take your truck soundproofing project to the next level. You’ll absorb more noise while gaining additional thermal benefits. You can’t beat that!

Step One: Truck Cab Sound Deadening

Many truck owners spend most of their day in their truck, and we understand wanting the most comfortable cab possible. You take calls in there, you listen to music in there, and you may even take the occasional nap in there. If you're going to live a good chunk of your life in a space, shouldn't it be one you're happy to be in?

The #1 thing you need to do is install Damplifier Pro™ on as much of the metal as you can cover, starting with the floor, the cabin side firewall and the doors (even the back cabin wall). We recommend a minimum of 60% coverage for best results. Damplifier Pro™ is the best truck sound deadening material you’ll find. It’s easy to use—peel, stick, and roll—and we don’t use asphalt, tar, or cheap fillers, which means no breathing in harmful chemicals. It’s spec'd to be better than the competition (check the data sheets) and is unmatched at stopping vibrations, while having the highest heat rating in the industry.

When using Damplifier Pro™ we always suggest pairing it with Luxury Liner Pro™, our premium mass loaded vinyl noise barrier. Treat Luxury Liner Pro™ and Damplifier Pro™ like fraternal twins; they’re different, but they do just about everything together. Seal the door cavity with Luxury Liner Pro™ and install it on the floor and the cabin side firewall with 100 coverage to build an extra wall between yourself and the airborne noise coming from the front and below the truck. Luxury Liner Pro™ is so important to add, because trucks have airborne sound problems with their beefy engines and tires.

If you do treat the cab with Luxury Liner Pro™ and Damplifier Pro™, just about any loud truck is going to see at least a 10-decibel reduction. That's a 50% reduction in noise! You've also added under carpet insulation to combat hot foot and other thermal related issues from excessive heat from the engine or through the floor. We’ve made it easy for you with our Truck Soundproofing Package that has all the Luxury Liner Pro™ and Damplifier Pro™ you need to turn your truck into the luxury vehicle it deserves to be.

Step Two: reduce engine noise with insulation and dampener

Vibrations from the running engine transmit into the metal and then down into your cab, making for a noisy space. Sound dampening your engine compartment is going to give you a level of comfort not found in many trucks, setting your truck apart from the rest. Whether you're interested in maxing out the sound reduction in your truck or are looking for something quick that doesn't involve getting inside the cab, we have two kits that we recommend for treating engine noise.

Firewall Insulation Kit

The first kit is our Firewall Insulation Kit, composed of Damplifier Pro™ and Mega Block™, a highly absorptive material. You’re getting another one-two combo—sound deadener and thermal insulator—that will reduce engine noise and shield your cab from engine heat. Apply Damplifier Pro™ to as close to 100% of the metal engine side firewall as you can, and cut the Mega Block™ to fit with scissors and tape the seams with foil insulation tape.

Both Damplifier Pro™ and Mega Block™ include a peel & stick adhesive for easy application. It’s important to have 2" of clearance between any insulation materials and any heat source. You’re looking at about a 3-5 dB reduction, which is about a 20-30% noise reduction.

Hood Insulation Kit

The second engine compartment option is our Hood Insulation Kit. These kits come in two packages: Damplifier Pro™ and Heat Wave Pro™ or Damplifier Pro™ and Mega Block™ (upgrade). It’s easy to apply in about an hour, and you'll muffle engine noise with anywhere from a 3-5 dB reduction. As an added bonus, your AC will work better on a hot day, too. And hey, if you want to hear your engine clearer, you can always roll your windows down.

With each improvement you make, you get a slightly better performance, and again, if you’re not willing to get into the cab, treating the engine compartment is your next best option. Our hood and firewall kits can be used in combination with a cab treatment or as a standalone option for modest noise reduction.

Step three: Deadening the Wheel Wells for Road Noise Reduction

Big tires equate to big road noise. Not to mention if you upgraded to offroad tires, which make a ton of noise on the highway due to how air passes through the aggressive tread. If you feel like the bulk of the noise you hear is coming up from the tires, we have a low-effort, low-cost sound deadening option. Use our Spectrum™ Spray on Deadener to treat all four wheel wells (takes just two gallons), and you're attacking that road and tire noise where it's originating. Deadening the wheel wells will prevent some of that structural vibration noise that originates in the tires from transmitting up into the body of the truck.

We recommend three layers at one millimeter thick each applied with a brush, roller, or spray gun. After applying Spectrum™ directly to the metal wheel wells, most trucks will see a 3-5 dB noise reduction (20-30% less noise). With our convenient Spectrum™ Wheel Well Sound Deadening Kits, you get two gallons and a spray gun. With Spectrum™ you can also treat the undercarriage for additional noise reduction!

Step FOUR: Sound Deadening Truck Roofs with Car Roof Insulation

The roof of your truck is just as important for keeping out heat as the roof of your home. Insulating your truck roof means less heat gettting in during the summer or out during the winter—so you'll have a more comfortable and conteolled temperature year-round. You'll also get better fuel economy, as blasting the AC can reduce fuel economy by 25%.

You’ve heard us say it before and we’ll say it again; get Damplifier Pro™ and get it a buddy. Put Damplifier Pro™ and Mega Zorbe™ on the roof to get extra noise absorption in the cab while simultaneously insulating the roof. So, when the sun beats down, less heat is getting through to you, keeping your cab comfortable. Yet again, we’re made things as easy for you as possible. Our Truck Roof Insulation Kit has everything you’ll need to sound deaden and insulate your truck’s roof.
