FAQs

A heat shield is a protective barrier to keep your car cool from radiant heat and to protect vital parts of your car.

Keep Your Car Cool and Comfortable

Second Skin’s heat shields protect structures from extreme temperatures by reflecting and insulating from unwanted heat. We use highly reflective, heat resistant materials to redirect radiant heat and insulate from heat transfer. No matter the heat issue in your vehicle, we can help you solve it and keep you running at peak performance.

Preserve Components and Wiring

A car heat shield is an important tool to protect key components and bodywork from heat damage. The heat given off by your engine and exhaust can reduce engine performance, increase the temperature in your car cabin, damage mechanical parts, and even reduce the expected life of your paint job. Applying heat shield material as hood insulation or firewall insulation will significantly mitigate these issues and help extend the life of your vehicle.

Heat shields can be applied anywhere there are radiant heat sources and should be placed with the foil facing the heat with a minimum 2" air gap. Here are some common places they're used:

  1. Around the exhaust system
  2. Lining fuel tank and lines
  3. Along transmission tunnel
  4. On the engine side firewall
  5. Lining the entire hood lid
  6. On back seat wall for vehicles with rear engines
  7. Lining air intake box

Yes, you can fix it! First, identify if rattle is a loose heat shield. You should never drive with a loose heat shield. If it is loose, try securing it if it isn't badly damaged by tightening any loose fasteners or with a clamp. If it's rusted, you can either drill new holes for rivets, if possible or outright replace it (our recommendation).
