How to Soundproof a Gun Range

The first priority in an indoor range is controlling reflections near the firing line. When a firearm is discharged, sound waves immediately strike the side walls and ceiling and reflect back toward the shooter. These first reflections significantly increase perceived loudness.

Install BlocknZorbe™ Multi Purpose Sound Panels directly onto the side walls adjacent to the shooting lanes and on the ceiling above the firing positions. The goal is to intercept sound energy as early as possible, reducing reverberation time and limiting echo buildup throughout the space.

Doors are one of the most common weak points in any sound containment system. Even if walls are treated properly, a hollow-core or poorly sealed door allows sound to escape easily.

Replace standard doors with STC 56 soundproof doors to keep the noise contained with a sleek looking door. Alternatively a solid core door with a soundproof door seal kit is a great alternative that doesn’t require replacement while ensuring a tight seal.

For additional containment, some customers will hang a Quiet Quilt™ 2-sided Barrier Blanket over the door surface on a track system. This adds mass and absorption at a critical transmission point, reducing the amount of noise that escapes into adjacent rooms or hallways.

If the range includes a viewing window, it can significantly weaken overall sound containment. Glass transmits airborne noise more easily than properly constructed walls, especially at the high energy levels produced by gunfire.

We recommend getting a Tru Acoustics Soundproof Window to really contain the noise, but if you already have windows in place and plan to keep them, install soundproof window inserts to improve soundproofing by creating an additional air gap and increasing overall window performance. The insert allows your window to be properly sealed to the existing frame, as even small air leaks reduce effectiveness.

When treated correctly, the viewing area can maintain visibility without becoming a primary escape path for sound.

Outdoor shooting boxes concentrate and project sound forward. Hard interior surfaces reflect muzzle blast outward, increasing the distance sound travels beyond the property.

Many outdoor ranges use metal roofing, which strongly reflects sound back toward the shooter and outward into the surrounding environment. This reflective surface can amplify the perceived sharpness of gunfire.

Treating the ceiling area inside the shooting box improves overall sound control and limits noise escaping from the open front of the structure.

Structural containment plays a larger role outdoors. A full or partial range baffle system helps prevent sound from traveling beyond the intended shooting direction.

Smaller ranges may rely on earth berms to limit sound transmission. Larger facilities often require continuous wall systems constructed from durable materials. A common approach uses a minimum 10-gauge aluminum steel exterior covered with at least one inch of soft wood.

While these baffles effectively block outward sound travel, they reflect sound energy back toward the firing line.
