FAQs

Yes, Luxury Liner E84 Class A meets the ASTM E84 Class A fire rating, the standard most commercial projects with fire code requirements need to meet. It's also reinforced with polyester scrim for extra strength and UV resistant for outdoor use. If your project has specific fire code requirements, check with your inspector on which rating you need before you install.

As a material, 1 lb MLV is STC 27 and 2 lb MLV is STC 32 (the higher the number, the more sound it blocks). That said, you should think about how MLV performs as part of a full wall assembly rather than alone. A standard assembly built around 1 lb MLV, shown below, gets you to about STC 47 as a system:

  • 5/8" Drywall
  • Luxury Liner MLV (1 lb)
  • 2x4 Wood Studs (24" o.c.)
  • 3-1/2" R-13 Fiberglass Batt Insulation
  • 5/8" Drywall

You can swap in 2 lb MLV and that same assembly climbs to roughly STC 48-49.

Picking the right Luxury Liner product depends on the format you need — roll or sheet — and the environment it's going into. Standard 1 lb and 2 lb rolls cover interior walls and enclosures. The Reinforced, E84, and Foil Faced rolls are built for specific conditions like outdoor exposure, fire code, or heat. Luxury Liner Pro and the Luxury Liner Sheet come in smaller pre-cut sheets, better suited to enclosures, pipe lagging, and other small jobs where a full roll isn't practical. Luxury Liner Pro is also our recommended mass loaded vinyl for cars, if you're working on a vehicle instead.

For a fence, gun range backstop, or anything hanging vertically outside, use Luxury Liner Reinforced — its scrim reinforcement gives it far higher tensile strength (1155 psi) so it can hang and take contact without tearing. If the install also needs to meet fire code or stay UV-stable in direct sun, Luxury Liner E84 Class A is the better pick.

The ‘1 lb’ and ‘2 lb’ names refer to weight per square foot, and more weight means more sound blocked. 1 lb MLV is STC 27 and the right choice for most interior walls and general soundproofing. 2 lb MLV is STC 32, our densest option, and it's what we recommend for maximum sound blocking like soundproof boxes and home theater walls.
