FAQs

There are four key concepts when it comes to fence soundproofing that you'll need to know to build an effective barrier: fence height and width, fence placement, fence density, and fence construction.

Key How it Works
Fence Height & Width The fence must break line of sight with the noise source. Generally 1.5x the height and width of the noise source is preferred.
Fence Placement The fence must be placed close to the noise source or close to the hearing side. A fence placed halfway between the two is useless for blocking sound.
Fence Density The fence must have mass to block sound, forcing the sound to go up and over (diffraction).
Fence Construction Your fence needs to be airtight to keep sound from leaking through. Often times, measures you would take to add mass will also resolve this too.

It absolutely works! As long as you break line of sight with a heavy, airtight barrier, you'll be able to significantly reduce the noise heard from one side to the other. Consult an expert and follow the princples of soundproofing a fence: height & width, placement, density, and construction.

The things that drive difference are cost, reuseability, ease of install, and sound absorption needs. For most residential fences, we are going to recommend our Luxury Liner Reinforced MLV for its balance of toughness and cost. If you need some absorption because of other reflective surfaces near the noise source, you could consider BlocknZorbe or Quiet Quilt Outdoor Blankets. For construction sites that have to maintain a certain sound level and that often will bring the soundproofing from site to site, the Quiet Quilt Outdoor Soundproof Blankets are a perfect pick!
