FAQs

No, acoustic foam does not block sound. We often run into people who want to cover a wall, ceiling, window, or door with foam to keep sound out. Unfortunately, acoustic foam is porous and will allow sound to pass right through. Barriers that block sound use mass, isolation, and an airtight construction.

Yes, acoustic foam is excellent for absorbing sound inside of a space. It's a sound absorption material that should be used to reduce reverb and echo in a room for better sound quality and speech intelligibility. Depending on the requirements for the project, we may recommend foam or we may recommend one of our many other acoustical materials.

The cheaper polyurethane foams are extremely flammable, and are no longer allowed in commercial buildings due to several high profile disasters in the 1990s and 2000s. Class A fire rated melamine foam is the only foam we recommend. Foam also may not make sense for some projects due to durability requirements or aesthetics.

Treat your foam like you would any acoustic panel. If you're in a niche room like a studio, the best spots are reflection points—like the walls to the left and right of your speakers and the wall behind your setup. For the most part though, you'll want to place it as evenly throughout the room as you can. Our high-quality foam outlasts typical polyurethane foam but foam is foam — it's easy to damage. We recommend placing it out of the way, especially in areas with higher traffic or action.

Regular acoustic foam is great for mid/high frequencies. Bass traps are thicker, denser pieces of foam that help tame low-end buildup. Most audio-focused rooms need a mix of both for balanced sound.

Most panels can be mounted with adhesive spray, double-sided tape, or removable mounting tabs. We even have some options for a peel & stick backing. If you want to avoid wall damage or glue residue, try placing them on foam boards or lightweight frames you can hang like artwork. Just be careful applying pressure so as to not damage the foam.

Absolutely. Our foam comes in different cuts (wedges, pyramids, egg crate) and three standard colors, so you can treat your room and make it look sharp. If you need more color options, reach out to us at 800-679-8511 to discuss options. These foam panels can also be spray painted with a latex paint. The paint itself would need to match the fire rating standards of the foam to maintain that Class A rating.

Yes, you can spray paint these with a latex paint or you can reach out to us for painting options. If painting in the field, you will need a paint that matches the fire rating standards of the foam to maintain that Class A rating. Our custom-order, painted foam will still be Class A fire rated.

No, we cannot roll Mela Mute that is any thicker than 1/4".
