What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Hollow core doors are one of the weakest points in any soundproofing project. Their lightweight construction allows sound to pass through easily, making them a poor candidate for meaningful noise reduction. This guide explains why replacement is the preferred solution and what limited options exist when replacement isn’t possible.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Understand why hollow core doors fail at soundproofing
  • Identify when door replacement is the only effective solution
  • Know when sealing off a door is possible—and when it isn’t
  • Learn how door seals contribute to real-world noise reduction
  • Compare common door soundproofing approaches realistically

Before You Start: Choosing the Right Approach

There are multiple ways people attempt to soundproof hollow core doors, but they do not all deliver the same results. Some methods reduce sound slightly but compromise access, appearance, or practicality. Others address the root problem by eliminating the hollow door altogether.

Before moving forward, it’s important to decide whether the door must remain functional or if it can be sealed off entirely. That single constraint determines which solutions are even viable.

Step-by-Step: How to Soundproof a Hollow Core Door

Step 1: Replace the Hollow Core Door

Replacing the hollow core door with a solid core door is the only solution Second Skin Audio fully stands behind. Hollow doors lack the mass required to block sound, and no surface-applied treatment can compensate for that deficiency. This is the first of the steps needed to soundproof your door.

If the door can be replaced, do not compromise on this step. A solid core door dramatically improves noise reduction and allows proper sealing methods to work as intended.

Cannot Replace the Door?

If the door cannot be replaced and does not need to remain accessible, it may be sealed off entirely using a material with mass, as long as you make it airtight. You can hang Luxury Liner Reinforced MLV Roll or Quiet Quilt Indoor Soundproof Blankets.

In these cases, the material must be installed flush to the wall, not the door itself, using Velcro or magnetic mounting. Coverage must be 100%, extending past the door frame on all sides. This approach is not recommended for access doors and should be considered a last resort.

If you are using mass loaded vinyl, follow the proper installation method outlined in how to hang mass loaded vinyl.
