What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Floors are a major pathway for noise transfer in multi-story buildings. Footsteps, dropped objects, and appliance vibration can easily travel through floor assemblies and into rooms below. This guide explains how to soundproof a floor by addressing impact and airborne noise using floor-side and ceiling-side solutions.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Identify whether floor noise is impact-based or airborne
  • Decide whether to treat the floor above or the ceiling below
  • Follow proper installation steps for floor soundproofing systems
  • Understand when ceiling treatments are the better option
  • Reduce vibration caused by appliances and heavy objects

Before You Start: Identify the Type of Noise

Before choosing a solution, determine whether the noise coming through the floor is impact noise or airborne noise.

  • Impact noise includes footsteps, dropped items, and furniture movement.
  • Airborne noise includes voices, music, and television sound.

Most floor noise problems are impact-dominant, which is why floor-side isolation is usually the most effective starting point. Understanding the noise type helps you choose the right side of the floor–ceiling assembly to treat.

Step-by-Step: How to Soundproof a Floor From the Floor Side

The following steps walk through the complete process for soundproofing a floor from the floor side of the assembly. This is simplest way to reduce impact noise.

Step 1: Choose the Correct Rubber Underlayment Thickness

Select a rubber underlayment thickness appropriate for the finished floor type. Generally speaking, the thicker the underlayment, the higher the performance. You'll want to take the change in height into consideration as well. For tile floors, you'll need 2mm underlayment or you'll need to have a plywood layer above it for stability to prevent tile cracking.

Step-by-Step: How to Soundproof a Floor From the Ceiling Side

When treating the floor above isn’t possible, noise can be reduced from below by soundproofing the ceiling.

Step 1: Decouple the Ceiling to Reduce Vibration Transfer

Installing RSIC-1® Resilient Sound Isolation Clips between the ceiling framing and drywall helps prevent vibration from traveling directly into the structure.

This approach is especially important when footsteps are the primary issue.

Are Any Appliances or Objects the Cause of the Noise?

In some cases, floor noise isn’t coming from footsteps or voices at all, but from appliances or objects transmitting vibration directly into the floor. Common culprits include washing machines, treadmills, drum kits, speakers, and other equipment that “buzzes” or “thumps” during operation.

If you need a drum mat or have an area rug under your drum kit, consider our soundproof floor mat. If you’re soundproofing a washing machine or other equipment, anti vibration pads are a great option for targeted applications under equipment or an appliance that's vibrating.
