What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Laundry rooms are one of the most common sources of household noise. Washing machines and dryers create vibration, airborne noise, and echo that can travel into nearby rooms. This guide explains how to reduce laundry room noise using proven soundproofing and acoustic treatment methods.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Stop washing machine vibration from transferring through the floor to reduce structure-borne noise
  • Reduce dryer drum resonance and rattling for quieter operation
  • Block noise from escaping through doors and walls to contain sound within the laundry room
  • Prevent structural vibration from reaching framing and spreading through your home
  • Reduce echo inside the laundry room for a more controlled sound environment
  • Choose the right solution for your home and noise level based on your setup and goals

Before You Start: Choosing the Right Approach

Laundry room noise comes from two main sources: impact noise—structural vibrations from the machines shaking the floor and walls—and airborne noise—direct and reflected sound of the machine spinning, humming, and rattling.

Start by isolating vibration at the source. Then address doors, walls, and room acoustics as needed.

Step-by-Step: How to Soundproof a Laundry Room

The following steps walk through the complete process for soundproofing a laundry room.

Step 1: Soundproof the Washing Machine and Dryer

Vibration is the primary problem we hear about. When machines make contact with the floor or walls directly, they transfer structural vibration throughout the home. First, make sure the washer and dryer are level and not touching surrounding walls. Even light contact can transmit vibration.

We’ll give you three options for reducing that vibrational noise going into the floor, but for more machine-specific strategies, see how to soundproof a washing machine.

Option A: Use a Washing Machine Mat

Install a washing machine mat beneath the unit. The Stomp Mat isolates the machine from the floor, reducing impact energy transfer.

Option B: Install Isolation Pads

Place washing machine isolation pads under each machine foot. These reduce vibration at the contact point and are a simple, quick-install solution.

Option C: Upgrade the Floor Underlayment

If renovating or installing new flooring, use a tile flooring underlayment like UnderBlock beneath the finished surface. This reduces impact vibration and improves overall floor isolation.

Alternative for Dryers: Add Damping to the Drum

Stick on sound deadening material to the dryer drum housing. This reduces resonance and vibration of thin metal panels.

For most homes, start with machine isolation. Add door sealing next. Add absorption in there next. Upgrade walls if noise transfer remains significant as a last resort.
