What You'll Learn (and Why It Matters)

Freightliner truck hoods are large fiberglass panels that allow engine noise, vibration, and heat to travel directly toward the cab. Without proper treatment, this can increase driver fatigue and reduce overall comfort. Installing the correct combination of sound deadening and insulation materials helps control vibration while reducing both heat and airborne noise coming from the engine bay.

By the End of This Guide, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Understand how Freightliner hood panels transmit engine vibration and noise into the cab
  • Learn why a two-layer treatment works best for truck hoods to control both vibration and heat
  • Apply sound deadening materials correctly for long-lasting noise reduction
  • Decide when to use thermal insulation vs. sound blocking materials under your hood
  • Choose the right hood insulation material for your Freightliner truck based on your noise and heat control goals

Step-by-Step: How to Soundproof a Freightliner Hood

The following steps walk through the complete process for soundproof a freightliner hood.

Step 1: Strip and Clean the Hood

Begin by opening the hood and removing any existing factory insulation or clips attached to the inner hood surface. Over time, the original insulation often becomes brittle or saturated with oil and road grime, which reduces its effectiveness. Removing the old liner allows you to access the bare structure of the hood so new materials can be installed properly.

Once the hood liner is removed, thoroughly clean the inner hood structure. Use a degreaser or alcohol-based cleaner to remove dirt, grease, and residue from the fiberglass or metal surfaces. Proper cleaning is critical because adhesives bond much more effectively to a clean surface. Taking the time to prepare the surface will ensure the materials remain securely attached over time when exposed to heat and vibration.

This preparation step also makes it easier to identify the large flat panels that benefit most from vibration control using sound deadening.
