How to Insulate a Car Roof

Start by carefully removing the interior trim components that hold the headliner in place. This typically includes:

• Grab handles
• Dome lights
• Sun visors
• A-pillar and B-pillar trim pieces

Once the headliner is removed, you’ll have full access to the bare metal roof panel.

Before installing any material, clean the metal thoroughly using isopropyl alcohol or a degreaser. This removes dust, oils, and residue so the materials adhere properly.

Proper surface preparation ensures long-term adhesion and the best performance.

The first layer of the Second Skin system is a sound deadener applied directly to the roof metal. This layer helps deaden the panel and reduce vibrations caused by road movement and wind. It is a crucial step in how you soundproof a car roof, but if you truly only care about insulation, you can skip to the next step.

Products categorized as sound deadening material work by adding mass and damping to the metal panel, which helps reduce structural noise. You can install sheet-style deadener like Damplifier Pro or a liquid solution such as Spectrum™ liquid deadener.

Coverage recommendation: For maximum thermal improvement and vibration control, aim for 100% coverage across the roof panel.

Once the sound deadener is installed, the next step is adding a thermal insulation layer. We use R-value to determine a material’s capacity to resist heat flow. Materials like Heat Wave Pro™ jute insulation help slow heat transfer from the roof into the cabin, improving interior comfort during hot weather and provide a good bit of flexibility for tighter spaces.

For additional sound absorption inside the cabin, Melamine foam sheets like Mega Zorbe™ have an excellent R-Value and help absorb airborne noise. Just make sure you have enough clearance for the material to remain fluffed out, or it will lose its effectiveness. 3M™ Thinsulate SM400L is another great alternative for car roof insulation for its R-Value, pricepoint, and malleability.

Cut the insulation to fit between the roof braces and install it so it sits flat against the panel beneath the headliner. When combined with the sound deadener layer, this creates a complete two-layer system that controls heat and reduces cabin noise.

After installing the insulation, carefully reinstall the headliner and interior trim components.
